Common Name: Millstone™ Japanese Pagoda Tree
Millstone (TM) Japanese Pagodatree (Sophora japonica 'Halka' PP 7554) is among the rare shade trees that flower in summer. Creamy white flowers borne on upright stalks of 6-12" in height hover about the lustrous dark green leaves of late summer. Foliage of this urban and pollution-tolerant tree turns yellow in autumn. Its symmetrical and upsweeping branches form a dense, rounded crown that tops out at about 50 feet in height with a spread of about 45 feet. Hardiness is USDA Zone 5.
Originally selected for its distinctive rounded canopy and uniform growth habitat by Halka Nurseries of New Jersey, it is named in honor of the township where the renowned nursery is located. Co-introduced more than a decade ago by Halka Nurseries and J. Frank Schmidt & Son Co., it has proben over the years to have cleaner foliage and better resistance to canker infections, making it our top choice among the cultivars. It is also known as Styphnolobium japonicum and Chinese Scholar Tree. (J. Frank Schmidt & Son Co.)
