Common Name: Guardian™ Columnar Aspen
Disease resistance is a conƟnuum that ranges from complete suscepƟbility to immunity. Bronze leaf disease (BLD) is a fungal disease, spread by wind‐blown spores, that has decimated stands of Swedish aspen and Tower poplar across the prairie provinces. Fortunately a new contender has emerged in the baƩle against BLD. ‘Guardian’ columnar aspen presently offers a high level of resistance to BLD. When ‘Guardian’ was grown beside suscepƟble Swedish aspen under Mani‐ toba nursery condiƟons, the difference in disease response was obvious. ‘Guardian’ is a seedless, medium‐sized (12 m x 3 m) tree that provides a fast‐ growing, verƟcal element to the prairie landscape. Its growth rate is similar to other columnar aspen poplars. Young trees may require some shearing to develop the desired fullness. — Jeffries Nurseries
