Common Name: Center Glow® Common Ninebark
Unique foliage color and a rugged disposition are the hallmark of this superior shrub. The spring leaves have centers of golden green, orange, and copper tones which are surrounded by dark red-purple with the hub morphing into shades of red as summer takes over. This cultivar is more compact in growth habit than the species, but just as adaptable to various growing conditions. White flushed pink flowers are produced in clusters during late spring and, although hidden during the growing season, the exfoliating bark which exposes beautiful colors of light brown to red brown, debuts in autumn and is attractive throughout winter.
This useful shrub grows well in moist to well-drained soil, but it will tolerate a wide range of conditions including sandy sites and clay. Plant it in full sun to open or light shade. The more sun it receives the richer the foliage. Once established it will only need occasional watering during dry weather. Little pruning is needed. The older twiggy canes can be removed, leaving the young whips which flower the best and grow robustly.
