Common Name: Grand Fir
Great Plant Picks - This native conifer is considered the standard for a beautiful Christmas tree shape. The shiny, dark green needles with silvery undersides complement the graceful, conical habit that this fir has in youth making it the perfect tree for the holiday tradition. A moderate-growing evergreen tree, it is the queen of our lowland forests. When crushed, grand fir needles emit a characteristic northwest woodland fragrance of citrus and pine. A mature tree towers above the garden with a columnar framework that shows off strongly layered branches and smooth gray bark.
The stately evergreen conifer thrives in rich, moist but well-drained soil, but will also grow well in sandy and rocky soils. It will grow best in full sun or light to dappled shade and is drought tolerant once established. Grand fir has no serious pest problems. Provide ample space for this large tree to fully develop into an impressive specimen.
