Great Plant Picks - This semi-evergreen shrub is noted for its glossy deep green foliage and long bloom time. The tubular, one-inch-long, soft pink flowers have a light and refreshing fragrance and are almost always in flower from early summer into late autumn. Its amazing adaptability to tough conditions and harsh sites make this abelia indispensible for the urban garden, but the better you treat it the more it will bloom. Plant ‘Edward Goucher’ in full sun or light shade for the best flowering. Plants prefer rich well-drained soil, but will tolerate poor compacted soils and clay. Once established it is quite drought tolerant. Abelia grows by producing strong upright arching canes that will flower heavily over the first three to four years. Allow these strong growing arching canes to grow and selectively prune out the older twiggy branches near the ground. 'Edward Goucher' is a hybrid between Abelia x grandiflora (a hybrid itself of Abelia chinensis x A. uniflora) and the Chinese species Abelia schumannii. It was raised at the USDA station at Glenn Dale, Maryland, in 1911.
