Dennstaedtia punctilobula releases a fragrance reminiscent of fresh mown hay, hence its common name. Hay scented fern grows from slender creeping rhizomes which allow this fern to form large colonies of light green fronds naturalizing along woodland edges. Hay scented fern is native to the Eastern United States but is a newer addition to the Western United States. It does best in partial sun but can take full sun with adequate water. Deer and rabbit resistant once established. It reaches 12–18 inches tall by 24–30 inches wide. Hardy to zones 3–8.<
