Plant Details
Rubus pentalobus (Taiwan Creeping Berry) (syn R. calycinoides)
An indestructible groundcover that looks good planted by the yard in commercial landscapes or in less quantity in smaller gardens. The three to five lobed leaves are mallow-like in appearance and heavily textured. They are emerald on the upper surface and gray beneath. This low groundcover is impervious to weeds and not overly vigorous. White flowers are produced sporadically in early summer and followed by golden fruits which are edible but not highly flavored so are better left to wildlife. It is excellent as a groundcover under groves of birches or other groupings of trees. A labor saving shrub of great utility.
This tough groundcover grows in full sun to light or open shade. It prefers a well-drained soil, but will tolerate sand or clay if the drainage is adequate. Regular watering helps establish this vigorous plant, but once it has settled in, it only needs occasional watering during dry weather. Long runners can be pruned back almost any time of the year. Provide ample room for it to fully develop.
