This choice deciduous shrub from Japan is highly valued for the beautiful shades of burgundy, yellow, orange, and red that suffuse its redbud-like leaves in autumn. Small purplish flowers appear in October, but they play second fiddle to the foliage display. Best in partial shade and humus-rich soil. A good companion for corylopsis, rhododendrons, or styrax. AGM winner. GPP award.

This shrub, native to Japan, is very showy in autumn displaying deep red leaves with tints of orange and purple. In the spring and summer the rounded heart-shaped foliage is heavily veined and dark green. It bears numerous dark purple flowers less than 1" across and forms a spreading shrub of 8-12' high.

This tall shrub grows up thinly in your understory, and unnoticed most of the year, in autumn transforms your woody garden into a cathedral with its stained glass window effect. Zone 6
