This North American native is often grown as a large shrub, though it can be pruned to a lovely small tree to 20 ft high by 15 ft wide, with spectacular long-lasting fall color in shades of yellow, red, orange, or purple. The smoky summer flowers, handsome foliage, and drought and soil tolerance are nice attributes as well. May be in danger of extinction in the wild, having been overharvested for the yellow & orange dye in their wood. Full to part sun. -20F. USDA zone 5.

This sm.tree, to 35' (somewhat larger than C.coggygria) can be "one of the most brilliantly coloured autumn shrubs" (Hillier) in the right location--dont'pamper it!(in other words--Sun/soil on the dry side)

My favorite tree for fall color! Larger and rangier than the usual Smoke Tree (to25') and rarely producing the 'smoke', the translucent leaves are unsurpassed for fall beauty. Zone 4.

Broad conical tree with some of the best fall color I've ever seen. Handsome elliptical leaves turn golden yellow, orange and pink! Tree 20' x 20'
