Plant Details
Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Coralliformis'
Width: Maximum 5 feet
Great Plant Picks - The contorted Hinoki cypress grows slowly to six feet tall and four to five feet wide. It bears striking, twisted branches and thin contorted foliage. The young twigs are bright orange-red and contrast nicely with the dark green foliage. It is very sculptural in appearance and an easily grown dwarf conifer. Grows best in full sun but tolerates light to dappled shade. It adapts to a variety of soils, from sandy sites to clay, provided the location is well-drained. Once established it is very drought tolerant, requiring little to no summer watering even during prolonged droughts. It requires very little pruning; heavy pruning can ruin its unique appearance. Only prune to remove dead, broken or poorly formed branches.
