Its foliage is a superlative red purple with a bit of green in summer. When it flowers, great masses of a heavenly orchid cover the bear twigs in abundance. It can turn a vivid yellow in fall, though its fall color is less predictable than other redbuds. In winter, it displays a beautiful tracery against a clear sky.

A wonderfully descriptive name for this very handsome purple-leaved variety of a fine small (20-30') American tree; along with rosy-purple flowers in spring the leaves unfold as a bright rosy-purple, becoming more subdued later. Sun-PSh/Med

Shimmering red-purple heart-shaped leaves in spring on this redbud classic. Full sun give the darkest color. Small tree 15' tall x 15' wide.

Unlike many purple leafed trees, this one does not green out in the summer. The purple flowers are heavy in spring and the tree is very hardy to zone 5. What's not to like? Well, here's the problem: for no reason after maybe 10 years or sometimes less, the tree does not leaf out in the spring. Mine here seems to be fine going on 20 years, but I have heard lots of stories about cared for trees biting the dust.
