The upright, vase shape keeps this Bloodgood-type palmatum contained in a smaller width. The smaller leaves emerge bright red and hold the color. A deeper red fall color is also held longer into the cool temperatures as the leaves do not drop as early. This improved variety is a more maintenance-free small tree that needs less pruning than other Japanese maples. (J Farms LLC)

Intense saturated red new growth in spring settles into a consistent burgundy tone into fall. Strong vertical growth habit.

A witch's broom on Bloodgood, this forms a slow-growing upright small tree (to 6-10' wide x 8-14' tall) w/fine deep burgundy foliage all season ; bright red, very long lasting fall color. Sun-PSh/Med

Supposedly Twombly is a columnar bright red dwarf, but I have seen one 15' x 8' so it wasn't small but it was indeed TIGHT and columnar, but fatly columnar.
