Report a problem
We have something of a problem here. The tree as described in Vertrees does not seem to be the one in the trade. The Chitoseyama which I have and which appears in Google Images is a greenleafed form which comes out a fetching soft pinkish and turns olive green later in the summer; it reliably puts on a heavy set of scarlet seeds which adds to the interest. The tree is vigorous for a JM and will soon get to about 12' tall and 10'wide. zone 6

Chitoseyama is an upright Japanese maple with deeply divided leaves. The new leaves come in a rich red that fades to a bronzed green in summer. This new red growth contrasts with older green leaves giving the plant a two-toned effect. Chitoseyama has strong stocky growth and makes an outstanding specimen with excellent red fall color. (One thousand years)

MATSUMURAE, red. First described in 1882, this form is a perfect vintage Japanese Maple with its Burgundy foliage and cascading habit. The broad, seven-lobed leaves are serrate and color well with some sun. Summer foliage mellows to a bronzy green and fall promises colors of bright crimson. Its slow growth insures a strong, picturesque cultivar that won't outgrow its space. Often used in containers and for bonsai.

The deeply-divided leaves of this 6-12' cascading maple open purple-red (color best in sun) adding green overtones during summer ; changing to bright crimson in fall; fine for container, bonsai, or specimen. Sun/Med
