PALMATUM, red. The name means "a red-haired dancing girl," an apt description for this fine cultivar as it sways in a gentle breeze. The leaves are small, brilliant scarlet and irregular in shape. At maturity they fade into pinkish red with an undertone of green to blue-green. A dense, dwarf tree, with a shrubby habit that grows wider than tall.

Beni maiko is a variegated upright with brilliant salmon pink spring growth that makes it a showstopper. It fades to a mottled green in summer. It has excellent bright red fall color. It is similar to Shindeshojo or Otome zakura in appearance, but is a stronger grower. Beni maiko will grow to be as wide as it is tall to about 14’. (Red dancing girl)
