Report a problem
If you like the fresh green of a mountain meadow, this cultivar is for you. The leaves are typical palmatum type and are luscious green. The real bonus is the green stems of 'Aoyagi' are as green as the foliage. Plant this with red stemmed 'Sango Kaku,' and you will have a sight to behold. In the winter, when all else is dreary, the show of the red and green is outstanding.

Aoyagi is sometimes referred to as the green counterpart to Sango kaku. The foliage is a bright lime in spring and throughout the summer. It is one of the few palmatum cultivars with a consistent clear yellow fall color. It has bright pea green branches that become yellowish in the winter. Aoyagi’s leaves are smaller and more twisted than Ukon’s. (Green coral)

The fresh green leaves and the green stems of this cultivar make this a good companion tree to the bright red barked trees like Sango kaku or Beni Kawa. The small leaves turn yellow in the fall. To 25'. zone 6
